Dave Duncan was never a great hitter but he was terriffic defensively and really understood the game. He has served as a pitching coach in the Major Leagues since 1978 and has been a pitching coach under Tony LaRussa managed teams since 1985. They were former teammates. Duncan has been the pitching coach for four Cy Young award winners , namely Lamarr Hoyt in 1983, Bob Welch in 1990, Dennis Eckersley in 1992, and Chris Carpenter in 2000.
