Born in Alberton PEI, Joseph Cyril O'Brien throughout his career demonstrated superior skill and ability, together with a reputation for honesty and integrity which earned him world wide praise and recognition. His record studded career included wins in all the major North American stakes races including two Hambletonian wins, The Little Brown Jug twice, five trips to the Winners’ Circle of the Kentucky Futurity and six winning drives in the America Trotting Classic.
Joe won over 5,000 races with an incredible career UDR of .386. He at one time held the record for most career wins. He drove the Maritime owned trotting mare Fresh Yankee to fame and fortune as harness racing's first $1 million winner. The prestigious O’Brien Awards in Canada are named after the late, great Joe O’Brien.
